In a way you want to set the purpose of the team on the other hand you don\u2019t want to be too directive. In this story I will explain why this even required with highly professional teams. Simply stating \u201cYou know what to do is not enough\u201d (1).<\/p><p id=\"f407\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u00a0<\/p><h2>Purpose on individual and team level<\/h2><p id=\"77ba\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa yn xc xd xe yo xg xh xi yp xk xl xm yq xo xp xq yr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">On individual and team level setting the right purpose will help creating more focus and prevent wasting energy on topics or discussions not relevant. In a very interesting study on how top performers operate Morton Hanson found out top performers focus on few key areas and then obsess to excel in it(2).<\/p><p id=\"1d42\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The same applies for team level. As a team member you must be able to know whether your decisions and others\u2019 are helping the team get closer to its goal or not. You must be able to know when to say no, you must be able to know how well you are doing individually and as a group. And, this can only be achieved by a clear purpose. A clear and compelling purpose enables alignment and therefore autonomy.<\/p><p id=\"40a2\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The definition of team purpose belongs to the team itself, it\u2019s part of its identity. We cannot call a group of people a \u201cteam\u201d without a shared, clear and compelling purpose about which they hold each other accountable for (3).<\/p><h2>Attributes of a good team Purpose<\/h2><p id=\"eb2c\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa yn xc xd xe yo xg xh xi yp xk xl xm yq xo xp xq yr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">A team\u2019s purpose cannot be too vague so that members have to make assumptions about what the <a class=\"fq aeo\" href=\"https:\/\/gerardchiva.com\/2015\/05\/16\/team-leadership\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">leader<\/a> is most interested in nor too clear, specific and boring. Specifying the ends, but no the means, builds on trust and human motivation.<\/p><h2>How to create a good team purpose?<\/h2><p id=\"bc34\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa yn xc xd xe yo xg xh xi yp xk xl xm yq xo xp xq yr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In this story I give 3 recommadations to define a team purpose<\/p><p id=\"9b0f\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Gerard Chiva (3) described the following questions to define a good purpose:<\/p><blockquote class=\"aiu aiv aiw\"><p id=\"79bc\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"nt js\">Vision \/ Goal (WHAT):<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"9215\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What is your goal as a team for next 6 months?<\/p><p id=\"3b5c\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"nt js\">Purpose \/ Motivation (WHY):<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"d24f\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What will be different\/better when you achieve that?<\/p><p id=\"a7e5\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">How achieving this objective is going to make your customers\u2019\/organizations\u2019 better?<\/p><p id=\"2c41\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"nt js\">Success Measures:<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"3f1e\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">How would you know you are there?<\/p><p id=\"d56d\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">How would you be able to say you achieved your goal?<\/p><p id=\"44a2\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What will you see when you get there?<\/p><p id=\"3f7a\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What will people say when you get there?<\/p><p id=\"d1c5\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"nt js\">Progress Measures:<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"1917\" class=\"wx wy afl nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">How will you know you are in the right direction?<\/p><\/blockquote><p id=\"1bfd\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">A second options is to use a Liberating Structure called <a class=\"fq aeo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.liberatingstructures.com\/33-purpose-to-practice-p2p\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong class=\"nt js\">Purpose-To-Practice (P2P)<\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"nt js\"> (4).<\/strong><\/p><p id=\"2b38\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The third option is to use the team canvas (5)<\/p><p id=\"a61f\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In the next article I will focus on Team enabling condition 3: are the right people on board?<\/p><p id=\"a15b\" class=\"wx wy vc nt b xa xb xc xd xe xf xg xh xi xj xk xl xm xn xo xp xq xr xs xt xu sh he\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em class=\"afl\">(1) Collaborative Intelligence \u2014 Using Teams to Solve Hard Problems, J.
